Review of the Impacts of Elevated Levels of
Nutrients on Australian Waterways, with particular

Abstract:
|
The
fact that unsuitable land management practices in
some parts of Australia have contributed to erosion
and sedimentation of waterways has been well
accepted in Australia for at least 15 years, and due
to the work of the agencies involved in the
Murray-Darling Basin Management Strategy and others
the mechanisms of nutrient loss from agricultural
land is recognised and the effects on water
resources have been documented. In more recent
times the public fact of water pollution caused by
nutrient enrichment has been experienced in Southern
Queensland with the display of toxic algal blooms in
some water courses raising greater public and
Government awareness of the potential for health
impacts resulting from our land and water management
practices, particularly in drought conditions.
This paper explores some of the causes and effects
of nutrient enrichment in our waterways with
particular reference to health issues, and discusses
briefly, mitigation measures.
